Adult New Yorkers tend to come up against unique challenges as a result of living, working, and playing in a competitively charged and ever-changing city. You may feel energized and depleted as a result of your lifestyle and unconscious habits, unattuned to your own limits, and burdened by unreasonably high expectations and external and internal pressures.
You may already sense that something in your life is amiss, revealing itself as depression, panic, apathy, difficulties at work; or in your relationship, or perhaps with increased alcohol or substance use. Concentration may suffer; isolation may occur. You may be experiencing disproportionate responses to situations that leave you feeling confused and guilty.
As a native New Yorker, I understand the personality that is drawn to our remarkable city. I am keenly aware of the toll modern day pressures place on us - whether you’re a parent, single man or woman, gay person, or part of a couple.

Adolescents have specific developmental needs. It is a turbulent time that is now compounded by the sophistication of technology, and all of its myriad implications. This age group faces situations and challenges that did not exist even ten years ago.
Today, adolescents are vulnerable to much more than in years past. In addition to all of the hormonal and biological changes, peer and cyber bullying, academic competition, distractibility difficulties, and appropriate child-parent power struggles, adolescents find themselves under enormous strain. They may not even be aware of it, as they’ve not yet fully developed a vocabulary to express their thoughts and emotions. Psychotherapy for adolescents is tailored to target the specific challenges that your son or daughter is experiencing. Having a space where they can speak as they may to no one else is profoundly therapeutic.

Couples unconsciously recreate the primary relationship that has been modeled for them. Often, behavioral patterns are set in motion without either party realizing it. This proves difficult when patterns of abuse, infidelity, mistrust, or financial and sexual secrets are prominent. The role of technology is now a third party in relationships, further complicating intimacy.
Couples can easily avoid conflict. Work, children, and electronic distractions can keep each person at a distance from the other. Sexual intimacy decreases. Constructive, enlightening emotional exchanges diminish. This is the moment when couples counseling can make the difference.

Family dynamics are confusing. Understanding how your family system functions, and what the impact of the functioning is on the individual members, is key to a healthy system. Frequently, one person in the system is acting out or behaving disproportionately and is holding the problem for the entire family. Or, members can split off from each other, forming sub-groups within the family, and creating “teams,” resulting in disharmony, destructive competitiveness, or scapegoating. Family therapy reorganizes the relationships, and seeks to restore balance among the members.
